Process

Things they don't tell you about being an artist - the process is actually mostly excruciating. I look at a panel, Joss paper and a few pine needles and I think to myself, what a stupid idea. I add a bit of color and it's definitely all wrong. I keep adding, layers over and next to other layers, and get the merest glimmer of something that calls beyond the materials; an elusive spark that disappears almost as soon as it appears. But I keep following, hoping that in the end the painting will hold enough of eternity within its imperfect self to carry a glimpse back to this beautiful and heartbreaking world.
