Better Than Your Best
"Will Pierce the Gloom" is large, nearly four feet to a side. It is both dramatic and serene. And it is one of my problem children...
I painted it intending the strong horizontal to anchor it, not be the crown. I painted it in a deep, rich purple with dusk blue accents. I loved it and lived with it for years, while it murmured to me about who it really wanted to be.
And then one day I acquiesced.
"Will Pierce the Gloom" is not the painting I intended it to be, and is much stronger for it.
Things they don't tell you about being an artist - if you listen; truly listen, sometimes you will do a painting that is better than your best.
