Art in the Time of Corona - A Prayer For Our Times
I muted my Instagram account for a week in solidarity with #amplifymelanatedvoices - and it gave me time to pause and ponder. So much is being revealed - the dark underbelly of racism and brutality, of privilege and injustice, and of how we look at a category and decide; good or bad, friend or foe....
I see the world in shades of gray, with each of us and each "other" - whatever that "other" is - containing elements both bright and dark. And I see each of us, and all of the "others", as evolving; constantly becoming.
During the week I worked on this piece from the series "But Trailing Clouds of Glory Do We Come". It started out rough, raw wood. The first layers of paint were brash and almost garish - too loud and overstated. Each subsequent layer softened until the final piece has a gentleness and glow that calls forth the beauty of the stone.
And so I hope for us and for our times. The strident voices are essential and must speak to the monstrous imbalance that has skewed our world. My hope and prayer is that the truth will finally win, that a new way will be born, and that it will shine...
