Stand in

A trip down memory lane…

From the series “No Prophecies Remembered”, this piece found its home a few years ago.

There was something so simple and elegant about that shard of wood that I just had to incorporate it into a painting. It reminded me of a game I used to play when riding the subway in New York - I would look at the faces surrounding me and find the thing that made them beautiful. The curve of a cheek, the slope of a nose, the shape of the eye; even in the exhausted and unattractive, there was always something extraordinary and utterly gorgeous if I only looked.

I often use objects and materials that are broken and ignored in my pieces - presenting them in a way that makes them beautiful as a stand in for the beauty and the light that shines through each of us…
