Art in the Time of Corona - The Way Forward
For those times when I don't see a way forward, I am grateful for a glance to the past, and for the lessons of making art….
Every painting I complete has baffled me for moments, or hours, or much, much more.
Every piece I complete has had me wanting to give up, or throw it away in order to start something new - hopefully something smooth, and swift, and easily completed.
And for every artwork I complete, I have wallowed in the discomfort, lived in it, trudged through it, and kept working until the painting showed me the way through to its completion.
In this strange time of isolation and uncertainty, when looking forward takes me to the unknown future and all of the fears that attach themselves to not knowing, a glance to the work I have completed reminds me that I have walked through all of that not knowing as well, and that at the end of the process, a thing of beauty is born.
Things they don't tell you about being an artist - the lessons learned on your worst days in the studio will carry you through a time with no blueprint.
